World’s best bodies converge on Gold Coast for NABBA 2004 World Championship

Queensland’s Gold Coast will well and truly cement its position as the “body beautiful” capital of Australia when it hosts the NABBA World Championships for the first time in June next year.

The competition is expected to attract more than 300 of the best male and female body builders from Australasia, Europe, USA, Canada and South America.

NABBA Australia President Graeme Lancefield welcomed the recent NABBA International decision, saying it was the result of a strong proposal and persistent lobbying.

He said the continually high standard and reputation of Australian athletes had also played an important role in the decision.

“Australia is recognised worldwide for its landscape and its friendly people – and now it has been acknowledged as the home of many of the world’s best body builders,” Graeme said.

“Australia is a safe destination for international visitors and an appropriate country to host the “crème de la crème” of amateur body building.

“The Gold Coast’s climate, beaches, theme parks, world-class accommodation and function centres make it the ideal choice to host an international event of this magnitude, prestige and reputation.

“This is a golden opportunity for all Australian body builders to compete at a truly international level in front of a home crowd.

“At the same time it’s our chance to gain some positive exposure in mainstream media and to play host to athletes and officials from all over the world who may otherwise never have visited our shores.

“It also provides us with the opportunity to reciprocate the hospitality extended to our Aussie teams over many years of competing in Europe.

“Not only are we expecting hundreds of competitors, but also their families and friends, and the majority of them will stay longer than just the competition days on the Gold Coast, and many will no doubt also travel to other destinations throughout Australia.”

Planning for the competition is already well underway with NABBA representatives in each state contributing to the event’s organisation.

In addition, Graeme will travel to this year’s NABBA World Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland (7 June) to hand deliver invitations to next year’s event to all athletes, officials and spectators.

Posters will also be distributed worldwide, and regular updates will be posted on NABBA Australia’s website www.nabba.com.au

A comprehensive public relations and marketing plan for the event is currently being developed to allow NABBA to further its reputation as Australia’s most professional, progressive and innovative amateur body building federation.

“This is our chance to show the rest of Australia and the world what we have to offer, not only in terms of quality physiques, but also as a professionally-run organisation,” Graeme said.

“I am confident we can follow in the footsteps of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and make this the “best ever” NABBA World Championships.”
