""Pain is just weakness leaving the body"" Overview (A Little About Me)I have been involved in training for 17 years. I started as a body builder and also compete in Brazilian Ju Jit-su and submission wrestling events. This means I have to combine speed and fitness with my strength training. I started with ASN as a sponsored athlete and now work full time as part of the Newcastle Team along with Adam and my fiancé Yvette. InterestsI am a volunteer surf life saver and spend down time at the beach or on a jet ski in the waves. I have completed my University degree with Honors in Dramatic Arts and English field and have a love of theatre, especially well constructed dialogue and actor interaction on stage. Favourites (Food, Bodyparts, People)My fave food is a big steak, never over-cooked! I like anyone with a strong balanced physique, especially legs and back. You have to work these body parts hard to get results. To me they represent dedication to training hard!
Motivations (What Motivates Me)Being able to say that I did my best and not letting my friends or family down. Training History (Years, Location, Trainer)I started bodybuilding at 17 and have been at it ever since. In 1990 bodybuilding was at its peak and Newcastle had around 10 state or national champions and they all trained at the same place, “Williams Total Fitness”. I walked in not knowing a thing about weights training to see all these animals training the house down and lifting the planet! Crazy stuff, even the women were bigger and stronger then me. It was tough on the ego and a tough training ground but a great place to do an ‘apprenticeship’ in bodybuilding.
In 1998 I tore a pectoral muscle completely off the bone doing a 485-pound bench press. This needed surgery and kept me pretty quiet for 12 months. In this time I was introduced to Brazilian ju jit-su and what has now become mixed martial arts. A friend of mine, who I out-weighed by 30kg, could kick my arse. He would choke me, bend my arms, my legs and all sorts of stuff to make me scream... I loved it and thought, "What will I be able to do when I learn this stuff at over 100kg?" I did learn and I still love it. I have competed at state, national and world qualifying events over the years, ranking as high as 3rd in my division at nationals and 6th at the qualifying event for world submission championships. Training Schedule (Training Style and Tips)I train 3 days on 1 day off.
Basically: chest, arms, then legs. Day off.
Back, shoulders, ham string + calves. Day off then repeat.
I pick 3 to 4 exercises and do 3 or 4 sets per exercise. I like to drop set and do this most sessions. For example I work up to a max-out lift in the first exercise and then move on to drop sets from 80% max down to failure. For legs this would be squats. I work up to max weight then drop set by 10 or 20kgs back to the bar, doing 10 or to fail reps. I mostly train of a morning due to wrestling commitments at night.
Cardio
6am every morning for 70 minutes, it involves walking, stair running and up to 1000 walking lunges. The whole ASN Newcastle Team do it with me most days.
